In the Shadow of the Giant

How big are giants? What do they look like? How to they behave? Have YOU ever met a giant?

The George Ewart Evans Centre for Storytelling partnered with Beyond the Border to bring a panel discussion with leading experts in storytelling and children’s literature Dr Ann Alston, Dr Steve Killick, Michael Dacre, Dr Alice Entwistle and Prof Mike Wilson at the 2016 Wales International Storytelling festival, as part of the 100th anniversary of Roald Dahl’s birth. The panel explored giants from every angle, in traditional stories and in children’s literature through performances and discussions, with support from Literature Wales Roald Dahl 100. The event was followed by a giant walk about by Raventales. Dr Alice Entwistle, Dr Ann Alston and Dr Emily Underwood-Lee were in hot pursuit of the giants, catching up with children and parents who had met the giants to explore what it is like for a child to meet a giant and how live and book based encounters with giants might compare.
